There are currently 4 provincial BC HERN salvage kits deployed throughout BC (Vancouver, Victoria, Prince George, and Kelowna) and another 2 will be added in 2022. These kits are meant to augment the salvage supplies that an institution already has on-site as part of their emergency planning.
The kit contains various supplies including PPE supplies that will help responders stay physically safe; tools and supplies to create a safe workspace for triage and salvage; and packing materials to help safely refrigerate and freeze collections that need to wait for specialized care. The kits and their rolling storage carts will be stored at a regional host institution and will be accessible to local cultural communities in times of need.
The Emergency Kit Hosts are volunteer organizations who manage the kit inventories and send out supplies when they are required in the event of an emergency. After the emergency, the receiving institution will return the restocked kit to the host institution.
The kit contains a package with details on how to host it, maintain it and send it in case of an emergency call. You can find the list of its content here.
