Webinars

BC HERN webinar series offers a good basic introduction to the topic of collections salvage for those who have little previous experience or for those looking for a refresher. The three webinars walk participants through a typical response scenario according to the major response areas:

  • Triage
  • Object tracking
  • Space planning
  • Support, pack and move
  • Stabilize and buy time
  • Treat, rehouse or discard
  • Return to the museum

Physical safety in an emergency, psychological effects of emergencies and documenting an emergency are also topics that are introduced.

The series is a good basic introduction to the topic for new or non-conservators or conservators looking for a refresher.

In November 2021, BCMA and BC HERN presented an one-hour webinar on the basics of disaster preparedness, to help cultural institutions build resilience through disaster preparedness. This webinar gave the basic tools to build a disaster preparedness plan, including an exploration of the museum’s vulnerabilities, the creation of an emergency team, the supplies needed, the prioritization of collections salvage, the communication of the plan, the institutional buy-in, the ongoing training and plan maintenance.
